Rome
Rome, the capital of Italy, lies on both banks of the Tiber River. It is one of the world's richest cities in art, history and religion. Rome means history and there are layers of it everywhere. From Etruscan tombs, Republican meeting rooms, Imperial temples, early-Christian churches, medieval bell towers, Renaissance palaces and Baroque basilicas. In this city a phenomenal concentration of history, legend and monuments coexist with an equally phenomenal concentration of people busily going about their everyday life. It's hard to say what you'll find most breathtaking about the eternal city - the arrogant opulence of the Vatican, the timelessness of the Forum, the top speed of a Fiat Bambino or the bill for your cafe latte.
Sightseeing & Museums The National Museum of Rome is one of the world's most important archaeological collections. Only a portion of the Museum's exhibitions can currently be visited because of reconstruction and rennovations. The Baths of Caracalla were built in 206. Sixteen hundred people could bathe here at the same time. There were rooms for hot, cold and warm baths. The baths were made of basalt, granite and alabaster. the St. Mary Major is the only Roman basilica which has retained its original shape. As legend goes, it was built in 352 B.C. after an appearance of the Blessed Virgin. The Early Middle Ages Museum founded in 1967 contains archaeological collections from the fourth to the thirteenth centuries. The Sistine Chapel includes the world's most famous paintings covering the whole ceiling and one wall of the chapel. The chapel was built in 1473 by Sixtus IV. Over the centuries the chapel has been used for the popes' private prayers. Rome Guide's Monuments & Museums will help you find your way around the historical treasure of the city.
Shopping Rome has been a thriving centre for design and cosmopolitan shooping since ancient times. Shopping in Rome today in many ways reflects this diverse ancient tradition. Italian designers have an international reputation for their luxoriously chic style in fashion, knitwear and leather goods (especially shoes and handbags) as well as in interior design, fabrics, ceramics and glass. The artisan craftsman tradition is strong, and love of good design filters through into the smallest items. It is not a city for bargains (though often better value than Florence and Milan), but the joys of window shopping here will offer plenty of compensation. Some of Rome's best shopping streets are known to be; Via dei Coronari. Here Art Nouveau and antiques enthusiasts will love browsing in the shops that line this charming street just northwest of Piazza Navona. Via del Pellegrino. Book and art shops abound here next to working artisans in the historic centre. Don't miss the mirror-lined alley near Campo de Fiori. Via dei Cappelari. This narrow , medieval street is a great place for watching furniture restorers and other artisans playing their crafts in the open air. Via Cola di Rienzo, situated close to the Vatican Museums. This long wide street has the finest food shops and is also good for clothes, books and gifts.
